Task 1: Music Video Theory
Introduction:
The aim today is to learn the history of Music videos as well as the genres of music theory.
There are many purposes of a music video, and one of them is to promote the music of an artist and his style of music. The second point is to promote different styles of music in general in the music industry and to enable the audience to understand and feel a certain way/mood.
Andrew Goodwin's four key main points are strands, links, intertextuality, and Genre characteristics.
Definition of genres in music theory:
Links in a music video refer to visuals/images and their relationship to the themes in the song.
Genre characteristics in music videos are how the genre is presented through the characteristics.
Intertextuality are references that are used from old sources of media used in new music videos.
The three modes/strands that are used in music videos are performance, narrative and concept.
Having multiple strands in a music video is essential because if there is no narrative people wouldn't understand what the story of the music video is about, also performance as that is what captures people's eye when they first see the music video and entertains the audience and concept is needed so that people can understand the artist's experiences expressed in the music video.
Task 2: Music Video Analysis
Virtual Insanity- Jamiroquai
1.
In the first few seconds of the music video the artist mentions how small things are big and to emphasize this the room that he is in looks very large, it is oppositional as the setting and objects in the music video are shown to be large when in reality they are minimal.
Somewhere in the middle of the music video, a crow is shown flying from above so the artist is trying to emphasize that seeing the crow as a normal thing is strange, it is literal because when people generally see a crow they don't associate it with good things they would think it brings bad luck.
More than halfway through the music video near the end, the artist talks about how things might be in the future where we control many things automatically without using a control, for example using sensors, face recognition, voice recognition and fingerprint recognition, you can also see the furniture moving without anyone moving them.
2.
The genres in the music video show futuristic representations in terms of the setting and the lighting and it also shows representation of the crow which could mean he is emphasising that many of the old things are being less paid attention to meaning that they are dying out and people are looking forward for the futuristic things.
Task 3: Camera License Test
What I need to learn:
I had to complete a little test about my knowledge of camera operating skills and to test what I know and what I need to improve.
The aim of this was to see what I know in theory about cameras so I would know how to use one practically and know the skills of how to operate a camera.
Task 4: Vox Pops Production
Task 5: Lighting Analysis and Practice Floorplan
Task 6: Lyrical analysis/Idea generation
Task 7: A/V Script and optional Storyboards.
Task 8: Call Sheet and Lighting Plan
Task 9: Rough Cut and Production/ Reflective Journal
Task 10: SWOT Analysis
Task 11: Final Cut
Task 12: Final Evaluation
The task I enjoyed the most and the one that I preferred is Task 5: Lighting Analysis and Practice Floorplan the reason is because I liked learning about the different moods or feelings which are represented through different colours which each have a certain mood or feeling depending on the colour, I also liked identifying and detailing how many light sources there are and which direction they're facing and mentioning the intensity of the lighting as well as what colours are present in the scene of the music videos.
In terms of difficulty I would say arranging the locations were difficult what time my group were going to film each scene and how long we would film it, also we couldn't film in one the locations as we couldn't get there so we filmed it in another location and also we didn't include the individuals that were mentioned in the cast list on the call sheet, we didn't include how many scenes we were going to film and some of the contact details weren't included but everything else was ok such as the quantity of the equipment and what equipment we were going to use and also the name of the location and the name of the site.
I would say we could've done much better with the planning of the music video as I mentioned in the previous question such as the time management with time of the start of each scene how long each scene will be filmed, one of the locations, contact details such as emails, phone numbers in case anything happens like last minute changes or you come in a day where you don't work but your needed for a specific thing. We could have made a time plan for the scenes and other things for the music video that were included in the call sheet.
This was my favourite shot in the whole of music video as I feel that this shot in the music video has the most energy because the cast member or character is running down the stairs so to me it is the best shot from all the other shots that were filmed in the music video.
I feel very confident editing in Adobe Premiere Pro with many things from the simple tools to the difficult tools, the basics of Premiere Pro, effect controls, resizing images and how to increase of decrease audio and how to regulate audio.
I am happy with the outcome or the result of the music video as we included many images and relevant ones that relate to the narrative of the music and within the timeline of the whole audio of the music.
I would say the weakness are preparation and organisation, me and my team could have prepared things better such as timing, positioning the different equipment and retaking it several times as well as taking off other days for filming so that we could get a good amount of work done on each of those days instead of having to do everything in one day. As for the organisation we could have organised who was doing what in terms of roles such as character/subject, camera work, and who was monitoring how the song is playing when it plays and when it stops in time with the lyrics, etc.
I have learnt how to work together more in a group, communicate more and listen more. I have also learnt how to improve a rough cut of a piece of media for example if one of the components of the isn't that good I know how to use the tools to make them better and from the tools I know I will carry it on for future and improve them and learn new tools as I will need to keep learning new tools and techniques everyday.
